Timing Belt

What is a Timing Belt?

If like a lot of the West Covina customers who have come to our Service Center, you own a car that’s more than a few years old, you will eventually have to change the timing belt. By contrast, Mercedes-Benz uses timing chains as opposed to belts. And new timing chains are designed to last the lifetime of the vehicle. So, most owners of newer Mercedes-Benz vehicles won’t have to worry about changing a timing chain. We both sell and service many high-quality used cars which aren’t Mercedes-Benz vehicles, however. And our Service team likes to keep all of our customers informed so they can keep whatever vehicle they drive running in top shape. So, let’s answer the following questions: What is a timing belt? How much is a timing belt?

So, What is a Timing Belt, Exactly?

What is a timing belt? What does it do? Timing belts ensure that the pistons and the valves work in sync with each other by simultaneously rotating the camshaft and crankshaft. Exact timing is critical to keep an engine running, and a stretched or worn belt will cause an engine to misfire. Repeated misfires can seriously damage an engine. A broken timing belt will cause an engine to overheat and break down. That’s why most manufacturers recommend changing a timing belt every 60,000 to 100,000 miles. Doing this will help ensure that your car will be running on our Covina roads for years to come.

How Much is a Timing Belt?

Timing belt replacement is just one of those maintenance costs owners can expect over the life of an older car. So, how much is a timing belt? Most timing belts cost between $25 and $50. But to have a timing belt changed will cost anywhere between $200 and $1000. Why? Labor is pretty intensive when changing a timing belt. Parts of the engine will need to be removed to access the belt. Furthermore, the experts recommend changing the water pump, tensioners, and pulleys when changing the timing belt. Can you change the timing belt yourself? It’s possible, but we don’t recommend it. This job involves tools most of our La Puenta area customers don’t have around their garage. And it’s easy to replace the belt incorrectly, which would result in incorrect timing. Incorrect timing, in turn, can result in bent valves which would mean totaling the car mechanically for a lot of used vehicles.
