How to Change the Battery in Your Mercedes Key

Having Trouble with Your Mercedes-Benz Key Fob?

If your key fob isn’t working like it used to, it could be a simple fix—a low or dead battery. At Mercedes-Benz of West Covina, we’re here to help you spot the signs of a weak key fob battery and walk you through how to replace it yourself, no service appointment needed.

How to Know When Your Key Fob Battery Is Dying

A failing key fob battery doesn’t always stop working all at once. Watch for these common warning signs:

  • Your Mercedes-Benz takes multiple tries to start.
  • The fob no longer locks or unlocks your doors.
  • The panic button or other remote functions stop responding.
  • A dashboard message may appear, warning of a key or battery issue.

If you’re experiencing any of these, it’s a good idea to swap out the battery before you’re left stranded or inconvenienced.

How to Replace Your Mercedes-Benz Key Fob Battery

You can replace your key fob battery in just a few minutes—no special tools or dealership visit required.

  1. Identify Your Key Fob Type
    • Chrome SmartKey® (newer models): Uses one CR 2025 battery
    • Original SmartKey® (older models): Uses two CR 2025 batteries
  2. Follow the Steps for Your KeyFor Chrome SmartKey®:

    • Slide the release tab at the bottom of the fob.
    • Remove the metal key.
    • Insert the key into the slot to pop open the battery compartment.
    • Replace the battery with the new one (positive side up).

    For Original SmartKey®:

    • Slide the latch to release the key.
    • Insert the key horizontally into the slot to open the case.
    • Replace both old batteries with fresh CR 2025 cells.

Dispose of the used batteries properly—many local recycling centers near Glendora will take them.
