Coupe vs. Sedan: What’s the Difference?

2020 Mercedes-Benz C 300 Coupe

The new Mercedes-Benz lineup offers both luxury sedans and coupes, such as the C-Class Sedan and CLS Coupe. What’s the difference between coupe and sedan models? You may think it boils down to one simple difference: sedans have four doors and coupes have two doors. However, it goes beyond the door count. Read on to learn more about how coupe vs. sedan body styles compare.

Comparing Coupe vs. Sedan Models

Learn more about the distinction between sedan vs. coupe cars below:

  • Number of Doors: Again, this is the most recognizable difference between the two.Typically, coupes have two doors and sedans have four.
  • Exterior Style: Style-wise, coupes and sedans are unique from one another. Coupes tend to be shorter with a sloping roofline and longer doors and rear windows, giving them a more streamlined appearance on Covina roads. Sedans are longer to emphasize luxury with shorter doors that help balance the profile.
  • Performance: Because coupes are smaller and weigh less, they tend to offer sportier performance. Sedans are larger, but usually offer a wider selection of engines and suspension systems.
  • Passenger Space: Sedans offer more passenger space and seat up to five people. Traditionally, coupes seat two to four people, although some can seat up to five. Passenger space is a little more restricted in coupes, though, due to their smaller dimensions.
  • Cargo Space: Sedans are larger and therefore offer more cargo space. That being said, if cargo space is a necessity for you, you may want to choose a sedan over a coupe.

Sedan vs. Coupe: Which One Should I Choose?

If you’re looking for a more family-oriented model, a sedan like the E-Class or S-Class may be the best choice for you. You’ll get seating for five people, along with ample passenger and cargo space for your trips around La Puenta. If you’re leaning more toward a sportier vehicle and space isn’t a concern for you, you may be happier inside a model like the CLA or CLS Coupe. The C-Class, E-Class, and S-Class are also available in coupe body styles and offer many of the same features found in their sedan counterparts.
